A global settlement of $260 Million to resolve whistleblower lawsuit under the False Claims Act included two Charlotte are hospitals, Lake Norman Regional and Davis Regional Medical Center.

The lawsuit alleged that hospitals billed government health care programs for inpatient services when the services should have been billed as outpatient services, and paid improper remunerations to physicians for patient referrals.

The False Claims Act rewards whistleblowers who report fraud against the government by allowing whistleblower to receive a percentage of any recovery.  If the government intervenes in the claims, a whistleblower may receive up to 25% of any recovery.
