Remedying the Crisis

Let our team of water contamination lawsuit attorneys in Raleigh help guide you through the legal process following exposure to Camp Lejeune’s toxic water.

Camp Lejeune Overview

Established in North Carolina in 1942, Camp Lejeune is a military base that spans an impressive 153,439 acres, with a 14-mile stretch of beach on the Atlantic Ocean. Over the years, Camp Lejeune has seen countless Marines pass through its gates, many of whom were unknowingly exposed to contaminated water.

Statistics show that from 1953 to 1987, the drinking water at Camp Lejeune was contaminated with industrial solvents known to cause cancer and other health problems. The water source at Camp Lejeune became contaminated when hazardous chemicals leached into the groundwater. These volatile organic compounds (VOCs) primarily included perchloroethylene (PCE), a dry-cleaning solvent, and trichloroethylene (TCE), a metal degreaser, but benzene and vinyl chloride were also discovered. Waste disposal practices at local businesses, industrial area spills, and leaking underground storage tanks all contributed to the base’s groundwater pollution. The contaminated groundwater was then tapped by two of Camp Lejeune’s eight water treatment plants, which inadvertently mixed clean and contaminated water, exposing countless individuals to dangerous chemicals over several decades.

What Is The Camp Lejeune Lawsuit?

The Camp Lejeune lawsuit is a legal action against the U.S. government that allows men, women, and children exposed to contaminated drinking water at Camp Lejeune between 1953 and 1987 to finally seek justice for the serious illnesses the toxins caused. While victims were previously barred from filing a lawsuit against the government, that changed on August 10, 2022, when the Honoring Our PACT Act of 2022 was signed into law. Section 804 of this act, known as the Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2022 (CLJA), allows individuals who were exposed to contaminated water at Camp Lejeune to pursue new legal actions seeking justice and monetary compensation for the harm they have suffered.

Effects of the Water

It has been revealed that the Camp Lejeune and MCAS New River drinking water was dangerously toxic between the years of 1953 and1987 due to significant chemical contamination. Marines, their families, and civilian workers stationed at Camp Lejeune were exposed to water that was contaminated with cancer-causing chemicals, including benzene, TCE (trichloroethylene), PCE (perchloroethylene), and vinyl chloride. These chemicals were found in two primary water treatment facilities on base—Hadnot Point and Tarawa Terrace.
