Whistleblowers are the government’s most effective weapon in combatting fraud.  Over the last 30 years, the government recovered $56 BILLION of public assets from fraudsters, according to the Department of Justice. Of this recovery, over $40 billion was due to the actions of private whistleblowers, who sounded the alarm under the False Claims Act (FCA).  Without these whistleblowers, the vast majority of fraud against the government would go unknown.

The FCA allows whistleblowers who have uncovered fraud against the government to file a civil action on behalf of the government.  If successful, the whistleblowers are entitled to share in the recovery.  The FCA also provides important protections for whistleblowers.  These provisions of the FCA show the government’s desire to encourage and reward whistleblowers who shed light on undiscovered fraud.

Many states have also enacted laws similar to the FCA, offering rewards and protections to whistleblowers who help defend states from fraud.
