In North Carolina, there is no legal obligation or duty to pay for a child’s college education. Parents can agree to do so in a separation agreement, but they are not required to do so.  If a parent does agree to pay for certain college expenses in a separation agreement, a court is most likely going to enforce that agreement.

If you are concerned about college expenses, it is important to try and negotiate that during the divorce process.  Having an experienced North Carolina divorce attorney can help with this.
