According to the National Safety Council traffic related fatalities that occurred between January and June of 2016 increased nine percent from the prior year during that period of time. The Council released estimates stating that 19,100 people were killed in the U.S. from January to the end of June. It is also estimated that approximately 2.2 million people were also seriously injured during that same time period.
At this current rate of traffic related fatalities, deaths during 2016 could exceed 40,000, which would be the first time in nine years that fatalities have been that high. The Safety Council stated that many factors contributed to the increase, a stronger economy and lower gases prices being two of those factors.
