Two Florida Whistleblowers Help Recover $1.7 Million
The Department of Justice has announced the recovery of $1.744 million with the help of two Florida whistleblowers.
The settlement resolves allegations that an Orlando area dermatology practice submitted false claims to Medicare. According to settlement documents, the practice billed 14,000 procedures under more complex billing codes than was warranted. The practice of billing Medicare or Medicaid under more complex—and more lucrative—codes is known as upcoding.
The lawsuit was initially filed by two whistleblowers under the False Claims Act (FCA). For their assistance in recovering funds for the federal government, the whistleblowers will be awarded over $305,000 from the proceeds.
