Dr. Kim Shaftner was born in Springfield, Ohio and attended Wittenberg University on a full academic scholarship. He graduated from the Ohio State University College of Medicine and then went on to family practice training at the Naval Regional Aerospace and Regional Medical Center in Pensacola, Florida.
Subsequently, he was attached as Battalion Surgeon to the 2nd Marine Division (2MARDIV) headquartered at Camp Lejeune. During this time, he accompanied his marines to Okinawa, Philippines, Korea, and Hong Kong.
He next completed residency training in anesthesiology and critical care at Duke University and went on to finish his Navy obligations at the naval hospital in Oakland, California. After leaving the Navy, Kim entered private practice in Eastern NC doing anesthesiology, critical care, and emergency medicine. In 1992 he bought a private medical practice in Princeton, North Carolina. He retired from medicine in 2004.
After a failed attempt at retirement, Kim went to law school and graduated from the Regent University School of Law in 2009. He served as Associate Editor of the Regent University Law Review for International Affairs and worked as a Medicolegal Fellow for Dr. Jay Sekulow and the DC-based American Center for Law and Justice. Since graduation, he has worked exclusively in medical malpractice, reviewing cases for attorneys, drafting pleadings and discovery, and consulting on litigation. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Regent Law and taught Health Law there.
Kim’s extensive medical and legal background provides his clients with insights and advantages not otherwise found in medical malpractice cases. He can read, interpret, and explain medical records in relevant, accessible terms.
Dr. Shaftner and his wife Dottie live in Clayton and have one married son. Kim enjoys gardening, photography, woodworking, and managing his Koi pond.
