Few parents can imagine living longer than their children. Consequently, many North Carolina parents make no provisions in case a child dies suddenly. Along with the shock and grief of a child’s loss, parents may be faced with unaffordable medical costs and funeral and burial expenses.

A child who survives but suffers serious injuries in a motor vehicle accident may endure a great deal of pain and suffering during a long recovery. Depending upon the nature of the injuries, the child could be disabled permanently. For parents, seemingly-endless medical bills run into the thousands and tens of thousands of dollars quickly.

Two North Carolina teens died in a recent single-vehicle crash that injured two other high school students. People.com reported that the four students were on their way home from North Davidson High School in Lexington at the time of the accident. An 18-year-old male and 15-year-old female, sitting in the back seat, were killed – the girl was ejected during the rollover crash.

A 17-year-old front seat passenger, the brother of the girl killed, suffered critical injuries. Reports were inconsistent about the 16-year-old driver’s injuries. One article stated the driver was in critical condition, while the People report said the teen was treated for minor injuries and released.

The male driver told troopers he was temporarily blinded when the wind blew hair into his eyes. The teen’s vehicle veered off the road into a copse of trees before flipping over onto its roof.

Speed allegedly played a role in the fatal crash. The driver was charged with death by motor vehicle, careless and reckless driving, a driver’s license violation — for having too many passengers in the vehicle — and a child restraint violation. The 15-year-old girl was not wearing a seat belt.

Attorneys can help parents recover compensation for losses caused by negligent drivers. A lawyer can explain laws applicable to liability cases involving minors.
